Flashcards
0/10
Wave Energy
Energy generated from the movement of surface waves, often using floating turbines or oscillating water columns. An example is a wave power farm at sea.
Wind Energy
Energy generated from the kinetic power of the wind, captured by wind turbines. An example is wind farms with multiple large turbines in windy areas.
Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)
Energy from sunlight concentrated by mirrors to heat a fluid, which then produces steam to drive turbines. An example is the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility.
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC)
Energy from the temperature difference between warmer surface water and colder deep water, typically using a heat engine. An example is the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii.
Solar Energy
Energy harnessed from the sun via photovoltaic cells which convert sunlight directly into electricity. An example is solar panels on a home's rooftop.
Hydropower
Energy created by moving water, typically harnessed by a dam that drives a turbine to generate electricity. An example is the Hoover Dam.
Geothermal Energy
Energy from the heat of the Earth's core, accessed by drilling and then converting steam into electricity. An example is the Geysers Geothermal Complex.
Tidal Energy
Energy obtained from tidal forces, using the rise and fall of sea levels to generate electricity. An example is a tidal barrage generating power.
Landfill Gas to Energy
Energy produced by capturing and using methane and other gases from decomposing waste in landfills. An example is a landfill gas power plant.
Biomass Energy
Energy derived from organic materials like wood, waste, and alcohol fuels. An example is a power plant using wood chips for fuel.
