Flashcards
0/25
Gross Weight
The combined weight of the wagon and the cargo it carries. Used to determine if a train is within safe operating limits.
Tare Weight
The weight of an empty freight wagon. Understanding Tare Weight is critical for calculating the net weight of the cargo.
Net Weight
The weight of the cargo without the weight of the wagon. It's used for billing and to ensure compliance with weight regulations.
Axle Load
The weight transmitted by a railway vehicle to the rails via its axles. Critical for maintaining rail integrity and safety.
Bill of Lading
A document issued by a carrier to acknowledge the receipt of cargo for shipment. Acts as a shipment receipt and contract.
Consist
A list detailing all the wagons in a train and their contents. Essential for managing the train configuration and cargo.
Intermodal Transport
The shipment of goods in the same container using multiple modes of transportation without any handling of the freight itself.
Bulk Cargo
Large quantities of goods such as grain, coal, or ore that are not packaged and are transported in large, consolidated amounts.
Less Than Truckload (LTL)
A freight service for shipments that are too small to require an entire railcar. Allows shippers to share cargo space.
Full Truckload (FTL)
A shipping method where a railcar is dedicated to one shipper's cargo. It’s faster and reduces cargo handling.
Dangerous Goods
Items that can pose a risk to health, safety, property, or the environment. They need special handling and transport regulations.
Containerization
The use of standardized containers for the efficient transport and handling of cargo. Improves logistics and reduces damages.
Roll-on/Roll-off (RoRo)
A method where vehicles roll on and off the rail wagons, typically used for cars, trucks, and heavy machinery transport.
Break Bulk Cargo
Cargo that is loaded individually rather than in bulk, often involving goods that are bagged, boxed, or drummed.
Waybill
A document prepared from the bill of lading that accompanies the shipped products, specifying the route and charges.
Reefer
Refrigerated cargo wagons used to transport perishable goods at specific temperatures to prevent spoilage.
Demurrage
A penalty charge against shippers or consignees for delaying the carrier's equipment beyond the allowed free time.
Transshipment
The process of transferring cargo from one form of transport to another, often necessary when changing transportation modes.
Captive Service
Rail services provided exclusively for one specific customer or industry, usually over privately-owned tracks.
Detention
A charge for holding a railcar or container inside or outside a terminal beyond the allotted free time.
Manifest
A comprehensive document listing the cargo, passengers, and crew of a train for the use of customs and other officials.
Articulated Cars
Railcars that are permanently connected with a single set of wheels shared between them, allowing for easier maneuvering and longer trains.
Bulkhead
A vertical partition in a railcar to separate or stabilize loads, preventing longitudinal movement of cargo.
Intercity Freight
Goods transported between cities typically by rail, covering medium to long distances to connect different regions.
Hump Yard
A type of rail yard using a hill (hump) over which freight cars are pushed and allowed to roll down sorted tracks by gravity.
