Flashcards
0/5
Troposphere
Altitude range: 0-12 km, Temperature trends: decreases with altitude, Notable features: contains most of the Earth's weather; the higher the altitude, the colder it gets due to the lapse rate.
Mesosphere
Altitude range: 50-85 km, Temperature trends: decreases with altitude, Notable features: meteors burn up in this layer; it is the coldest layer of Earth's atmosphere.
Thermosphere
Altitude range: 85-600 km, Temperature trends: increases with altitude, Notable features: the air is thin, and temperatures can get extremely high; the International Space Station orbits in this layer.
Stratosphere
Altitude range: 12-50 km, Temperature trends: increases with altitude, Notable features: contains the ozone layer which absorbs and scatters the solar ultraviolet radiation.
Exosphere
Altitude range: above 600 km, Temperature trends: variable, Notable features: the upper limit of the atmosphere, where it gradually fades into outer space; satellites orbit in this layer.
