Sleet
Sleet is frozen raindrops or ice pellets. It occurs when rain falls through a layer of freezing air near the ground, causing it to freeze before it hits the ground.
Freezing Rain
Freezing rain is rain that falls in liquid form but freezes upon impact with cold surfaces, forming a layer of glaze ice. It occurs when a thin layer of surface air is at or below freezing while the upper layers are warm enough for rain.
Rain
Rain is liquid water that falls from clouds when they become saturated. It forms when temperatures throughout the cloud and below it are above the freezing point (0°C or 32°F).
Hail
Hail consists of balls or irregular lumps of ice, known as hailstones. It forms in thunderstorms when strong updrafts carry raindrops into extremely cold areas of the atmosphere where they freeze into ice.
Snow
Snow is precipitation in the form of ice crystals. It occurs when water vapor in a cloud is converted directly to ice crystals and the temperatures in the cloud and near the ground are below freezing.
