Isobars
Lines connecting points of equal atmospheric pressure that indicate areas of high and low pressure and can reveal the presence of pressure systems and weather fronts.
Isotherms
Lines that connect points of equal temperature, they are useful in identifying temperature gradients and can indicate the likely areas for the formation of weather fronts.
Cold Front Symbol
A line with triangles pointing in the direction of movement, indicating an area where cold air is moving in and pushing up warmer air, often leading to cloud formation and precipitation.
Warm Front Symbol
A line with semicircles pointing towards the direction of movement, representing an area where warm air is moving over cold air, which can result in gradual cloud formation and steady precipitation.
High-Pressure System (Anticyclone)
Indicated by a large 'H' on weather maps. It suggests areas where the atmospheric pressure is high relative to its surroundings, often leading to settled weather and clear skies.
Low-Pressure System (Cyclone)
Denoted by a large 'L' on weather maps, this indicates areas of lower atmospheric pressure compared to its surroundings, usually associated with unsettled weather, including clouds and precipitation.
Wind Barbs
Symbols on the weather map that indicate wind direction and speed; the barb points in the direction from which the wind is blowing, and the number of feathers helps to estimate the wind speed.
Pressure Gradient
The rate of change of pressure with respect to distance; a strong pressure gradient indicates a steep change in pressure, which usually corresponds to strong winds and possibly stormy conditions.
