Low-Pressure System
Denoted by a large 'L', it signifies an area where the atmospheric pressure is lower than surrounding areas. Typical weather includes cloudiness, windy conditions, and precipitation.
Trough Symbol
An elongated area of relatively low atmospheric pressure. It is usually represented by a dashed line. It can lead to increased cloudiness and the chance of precipitation.
Cold Front Symbol
A line with triangles pointing in the direction of the frontal movement. It represents a moving boundary where a cold air mass is replacing a warmer air mass. Typical weather includes rapidly falling temperatures, gusty winds, and heavy precipitation.
Stationary Front Symbol
A line with alternating triangles and semicircles on opposite sides, signifying a non-moving boundary between two different air masses. It can bring days of cloudy, wet weather.
Squall Line Symbol
A line of active thunderstorms often accompanied by severe weather. It is not shown with a specific symbol on a weather map but can be inferred from radar imagery or a line of thunderstorm icons.
Warm Front Symbol
A line with semicircles pointing in the direction of the frontal movement. It indicates a boundary where a warm air mass is replacing a cooler air mass. Typical weather includes gradual temperature increases, overcast skies, and prolonged precipitation.
Isobar Symbol
A line that connects points of equal atmospheric pressure. Close spacing of isobars indicates high wind speeds, while wide spacing suggests calm weather.
Ridge Symbol
An elongated area of relatively high atmospheric pressure usually indicated by elongated 'H' symbols or isobars. It is associated with fair weather conditions.
Occluded Front Symbol
A line with alternating triangles and semicircles on the same side. It occurs when a cold front overtakes a warm front, trapping a cool air mass between warm and cold air masses. Typical weather can include diverse types of precipitation and complex weather patterns.
High-Pressure System
Represented by a large 'H', it denotes an area where the atmospheric pressure is higher than the surrounding area. Typical weather includes clear skies and calm weather.
