Atmospheric Pressure Systems

Flashcards

Cold Front
A cold front happens when cold air aggressively pushes underneath warmer air, leading to intense cloud formation and potential thunderstorms. The arrival of a cold front is often marked by a sharp drop in temperature and a swift change in wind direction.
Low Pressure System
A low pressure system, or cyclone, is characterized by rising air that can lead to cloud formation and precipitation. These systems often result in unsettled weather, including storms and windy conditions.
Warm Front
A warm front occurs when warm air advances and overrides cooler air. This can lead to gradual cloud development and steady precipitation. The weather is typically milder and more humid after the passage of a warm front.
High Pressure System
A high pressure system, also known as an anticyclone, often brings clear skies and relatively stable weather. Air descends in a high pressure system, which inhibits cloud formation and leads to lower relative humidity.
