Metaphysical Realism vs. Antirealism

Mind-independent World
Realism posits a world that exists independently of our perceptions, continuing without human minds. Antirealism suggests that the world cannot be understood without considering human perceptions or conceptual schemes.
Existence of Social Entities
Social realism accepts that institutions, classes, and social structures exist externally to individuals. Social antirealism sees these entities as constructed by individuals, communities or power dynamics.
Historical Narratives
Historical realism implies an objective past that narratives try to capture accurately. Antirealism suggests that historical accounts are constructs shaped by present perspectives and cannot claim objective truth.
Artistic Expressions
Aesthetic realism suggests that beauty is an objective feature of art. Antirealism about aesthetics posits that beauty is subjective and exists in the response of the observer, not in the art object itself.
Language and Meaning
Linguistic realism believes that words refer to real things or states in the world. Antirealism about language sees words as part of language games with meanings that are contingent on human practices.
Objects and Properties
Realism asserts that objects and their properties exist independently of our thoughts or beliefs. Antirealism may argue that objects and properties cannot be separated from our perceptual and conceptual frameworks.
Existence of Universals
Realism argues that universals or abstract objects exist independently of our thoughts. Antirealism denies that universals exist in a mind-independent way.
Scientific Theories
Realism treats successful scientific theories as true or approximately true reflections of reality. Antirealism, such as Instrumentalism, sees them as useful tools without necessarily making claims about truth.
Moral Values
Moral realism holds that moral values exist and remain objective. Moral antirealism denies the existence of objective morals, seeing them as constructed or subjective.
Mathematical Objects
Mathematical realism (Platonism) argues that mathematical entities exist in an abstract realm. Mathematical antirealism (Nominalism) contends they are conceptual and lack independent existence.
Ethical Statements
Ethical realism assumes that ethical statements can be true or false, indicating an objective basis for ethics. Ethical antirealism holds that ethical statements are not truth-apt; they express attitudes rather than factual claims.
Cause and Effect
Realism about causation implies that cause and effect relationships are real and discernible, while antirealism view on causation might treat it as a construct for describing observed regularities.
