Ginga
The fundamental movement in Capoeira, a constant rocking back and forth motion meant to keep a player moving and ready to attack or defend.
Role
A rolling movement used to dodge high attacks or quickly reposition oneself in the roda, resembling a sideways somersault.
Benção
A straight push kick aimed at the opponent’s torso to push them away or unbalance them, performed with the sole of the foot.
Meia-lua de frente
A circular kicking technique where the practitioner swings their leg in an outward arc towards the opponent's head or body.
Cabeçada
A headbutt directed at the opponent’s face or chest as a close-range attack, often surprising the opponent.
Macaco
A handstand-like move where the capoeirista kicks up with one leg while supporting their weight with their arms and flips over to land on their feet.
Rasteira
A sweeping move aimed to take the opponent off their feet by targeting their legs while one is on the ground or standing.
Martelo
A roundhouse kick where the capoeirista uses a snapping motion to strike the opponent's head or body with the top of the foot or the shin.
Esquiva
A defensive move where one avoids an attack by moving the body out of the way, often by bending at the knees or swaying to the side.
Queixada
A kick where the capoeirista steps to the side, swings their back leg across the front in a crescent motion aimed usually at the opponent's face.
Armada
A spinning kick that requires the capoeirista to turn around one full rotation before unleashing a horizontal kick at the opponent's torso or head.
Bandeira
A deceptive movement that combines a feint with a side step, often setting up for a counter-attack or creating distance.
Chapa
A side kick that is performed by striking with the flat of the foot, usually aimed at the opponent’s torso or thigh to push them or cause damage.
Ponte
An acrobatic move that resembles a back bridge, used to gain flexibility and as a defensive technique to evade attacks or create openings.
Vingativa
A counter-attack move where the capoeirista wraps around the attacking leg and uses their body weight to unbalance the opponent.
Tesoura
A double leg takedown that involves positioning oneself beside the opponent and using the legs to sweep them off the ground.
Au
The capoeira term for a cartwheel, which is used for evasion, to display athleticism, or transition into other movements.
Cocorinha
A squatting defensive move used to protect the head and body from high kicks by lowering the center of gravity.
Meia-lua de compasso
A powerful spinning kick delivered with the heel, usually aimed at the side of the opponent’s head or body.
Pião de mão
A spinning handstand move where the practitioner turns on their hands while keeping the body and legs in the air, demonstrating agility and control.
