Pinsetter
The mechanical system used to set up bowling pins into their correct position, clear fallen pins, and return the bowling ball.
Clean Game
A game in which the player knocks down all pins in each frame, with no open frames.
Brooklyn
A term to describe a ball that crosses over to the opposite side of the headpin from which it was thrown.
Foul Line
The line at the beginning of the bowling lane that a player must not cross during the approach and delivery of the bowling ball.
Approach
The area where the bowler takes steps toward the foul line to release the bowling ball.
Gutter
The area on either side of the bowling lane where the ball will fall if it doesn't stay on the lane.
Delivery
The release of the bowling ball and the motion of the arm and body to send the ball down the lane.
Foul
An infraction occurring when a part of the player's body crosses the foul line and touches any part of the lane during play.
The ideal strike ball hit area between certain pins. For a right-handed bowler, it’s between the 1 and 3 pins; for a left-handed bowler, it’s between the 1 and 2 pins.
Backswing
The part of the arm motion when the bowling arm swings backward prior to the forward swing and release of the ball.
Spare
A score achieved by knocking down all remaining pins during the second delivery in a given frame.
Lane
The long, narrow, and flat surface that the bowling ball is rolled down towards the pins.
Open Frame
A frame in which the player fails to knock down all ten pins with two deliveries.
Arrows
The aiming points usually found about 15 feet down the lane from the foul line, which help bowlers aim their shots.
Hook
The curve of the ball's path down the lane, starting from the straight line and curving towards the pins.
Perfect Game
A game in which a bowler scores the maximum of 300 points, achieved by rolling 12 consecutive strikes in ten frames.
Release
The moment when the bowler lets go of the bowling ball and transfers energy and motion to the ball.
Turkey
A term used when a player scores three consecutive strikes.
Split
A situation where two or more pins remain standing, separated by a distance such that the bowling ball cannot simultaneously touch both.
Strike
When all ten pins are knocked down with the first delivery of the ball in a frame.
