Bilge
The lowest compartment on a ship, where the two sides meet at the bottom.
Helm
The entire steering apparatus of a ship, including the rudder, tiller, wheel, etc.
Regatta
A series of boat races, typically involving crewed sailboats.
Galley
The kitchen of a ship or boat.
Propeller
A type of fan that transmits power by converting rotational motion into thrust.
Hull
The main body of a boat or ship, the structure that gives a boat its shape.
Mast
A tall vertical pole on a ship which supports sails or rigging.
Beam
The widest part of a boat.
Outboard motor
A propulsion system for boats that includes an engine, gearbox, and propeller or jet drive, and is designed to be mounted on the outside of the transom.
Tiller
A lever used to turn the rudder to steer a boat.
Keel
A boat's backbone; a structural beam running along the bottom of the boat.
Aft
Toward or at the back of a boat or ship.
Lifejacket
A personal flotation device designed to keep a person's head above water in the case of an emergency.
Forward
At or toward the front of a boat or ship; near the bow.
Rudder
A flat piece, typically located at the stern, used for steering a boat.
Dinghy
A small boat, often carried or towed by a larger vessel.
Mooring
Any permanent structure to which a vessel may be secured.
Wake
The trail of waves left behind a boat as it moves through the water.
Starboard
The right-hand side of a boat when facing forward.
Fathom
A nautical unit of depth, equivalent to 6 feet (1.8288 meters).
Jib
A triangular sail that sets ahead of the foremast, of a sailing vessel.
Bow
The front part of a boat.
Port
The left-hand side of a boat when facing forward.
Knot
A measure of speed on the water, equivalent to one nautical mile per hour.
Stern
The rear end of a boat.
Cabin
A room for passengers or crew on a ship.
Yacht
A medium-sized sailboat or motorboat used for private cruising, racing, or other noncommercial purposes.
Boom
A horizontal pole extending from the mast, used to extend the bottom of a sail.
Cleat
A metal or plastic fitting on boats where ropes are secured.
Draft
The vertical distance between the waterline and the bottom of the hull (keel); the minimum depth of water a boat or ship can safely navigate.
