Fairway
The area between the tee box and the putting green where the grass is well-maintained allowing for good lies.
Bogey
One stroke over par for a given hole.
Fore!
A warning shout given when it appears possible that a golf ball may hit other players or spectators.
Bunker
A hollow comprised of sand or grass meant to be an obstacle for golfers.
Fade
A shot that for a right-handed golfer, the ball moves left to right slightly.
Clubhead Speed
The speed at which the golf club is traveling at impact with the golf ball, influencing distance.
Stroke Play
A scoring system in golf where the player with the fewest total strokes at the end of the round wins.
Birdie
One stroke under par for a given hole.
Putting Green
The smooth grassy area at the end of a fairway containing the hole or cup.
Eagle
Two strokes under par for a given hole.
Handicap
A numerical measure of a golfer's potential ability, used to enable players of varying abilities to compete against each other.
Albatross
Also known as a double eagle, three strokes under par on a single hole.
Pin
The flagstick positioned in the cup on the green, also referred to simply as the 'flag'.
Hazard
An area on a golf course that provides a difficult obstacle which could be water, sand, or thick vegetation.
Match Play
A format of golf where players or teams compete against each other on a hole-by-hole basis.
Hook
A golf shot that results in a significant right to left curve for a right-handed player, often unintentionally.
Out of Bounds
Area outside the play limits of the course from which a player must take a penalty for their ball landing there.
Putt
A golf stroke used with a putter on the green to roll the ball into the hole.
Mulligan
A second chance to perform an action, usually a tee shot, after the first attempt went wrong, not counted on the scorecard.
Caddie
A person who carries a player's bag and clubs, and gives knowledgeable advice and moral support.
Rough
The area of grass on a golf course that is outside of the fairway and often taller and coarser.
Double Bogey
Two strokes over par for a given hole.
Divot
A piece of turf removed by a golf club when striking the ball on the fairway.
Par
The number of strokes a skilled golfer should require to complete a hole, round, or tournament.
Drive
The first shot taken at the teeing ground at each hole, especially with a driver.
Chip
A short shot played around the greens with a high trajectory intended to land softly and roll minimally.
Draw
A shot that for a right-handed player results in a controlled curve to the left.
Lie
The position or condition of the golf ball while it is at rest on the course, affecting the next stroke.
Tee Box
The starting point on each hole where the ball is first struck.
Slice
A golf shot that curves dramatically from left to right for a right-handed player, often unintentionally.
