A U-shaped bowl found in terrain parks, used for performing aerial tricks in sports like snowboarding and freestyle skiing.
Mogul
A mound on a ski slope formed when skiers push the snow into small piles as they make short, quick turns.
Backcountry Skiing
Skiing in remote areas outside of ski resort boundaries, often on unmarked and unpatrolled areas.
Groomed Trail
A ski run that has been smoothed out and packed down by snow-grooming equipment.
Snowplow
A beginner skiing technique for slowing down or stopping by pushing the front of the skis apart and the tails together, creating a wedge shape.

Piste
A marked ski run or path down a mountain for skiing and snowboarding.
Ski Poles
Tools used by skiers for balance and propulsion.
Freestyle Skiing
A type of skiing that encompasses several disciplines, including aerials, moguls, and half-pipe.

Fall Line

Powder
Fresh, loose, and un-compacted snow.
Parallel Skiing
A skiing technique in which both skis are kept parallel to each other while turning, more advanced than snowplow turns.
Ski Binding
A device that connects a ski boot to the ski, typically designed to release the boot in the event of a fall.
Ski Lift
Mechanical means of transporting skiers up a hill.
Edge Control
The skier's ability to tilt the skis onto their edges to carve a turn or maintain stability.
Ski Wax

Social activities and entertainment following a day's skiing.
Schuss

Giant Slalom
An alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline, which involves skiing between sets of poles ('gates') spaced at a greater distance from each other than in slalom but less than in Super-G.
Heli-Skiing
A type of backcountry skiing which involves a helicopter to access remote areas and slopes of untracked powder snow.
Ski Boot
A type of footwear specifically designed for use in skiing to provide a way to attach the skier to skis using ski bindings.
Carving
Skiing technique that involves leaning into the turn so that the ski edges cut into the snow.
Ski Touring
A form of backcountry skiing where both uphill and downhill travel are possible without the need for a ski lift.
Cross-Country Skiing
A type of skiing where skiers rely on their own locomotion to move across snow-covered terrain, rather than using ski lifts or other forms of assistance.
Super-G
A speed skiing event where the racer navigates through a course set with widely spaced gates, a combination of Downhill and Giant Slalom.
Apron
