Positive Psychology
A scientific field that studies human strengths and potential, aimed at promoting well-being and a fulfilling life.
PERMA model
A theoretical model of well-being put forward by Seligman; comprises Positive emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishments.
Flow
A psychological state characterized by complete absorption in a challenging and intrinsically rewarding activity.
Character Strengths
Positive traits reflected in thoughts, feelings, and behaviors that are considered moral virtues and lead to good life.
Subjective Well-Being
An individual's cognitive and affective evaluations of their life, including both emotional reactions and cognitive judgments.
Mindfulness
The practice of maintaining a nonjudgmental state of heightened or complete awareness of one's thoughts, emotions, or experiences on a moment-to-moment basis.
Resilience
The capability to recover quickly from difficulties and adapt well in the face of adversity, trauma, or stress.
Gratitude
A sense of thankfulness and appreciation for positive outcomes or beneficent aspects of life.
Optimism
An attitude that reflects a belief that the outcomes of events or experiences will generally be positive.
Hope
An emotional state accompanied by clear thoughts about a positive future and the pathways and agency to achieve it.
Authenticity
The quality of being genuine or true to one's own personality, spirit, or character, despite external pressures.
Self-Efficacy
The belief in one's own ability to succeed in specific situations or accomplish a task.
Eudaimonic Well-Being
A conception of well-being emphasizing meaning and self-realization and defining well-being in terms of the degree to which a person is fully functioning.
Hedonic Well-Being
A conception of well-being that relates to pleasure or happiness, focusing on the balance of pleasant over unpleasant experiences.
Positive Affect
The experience of pleasurable emotions such as joy, happiness, excitement, enthusiasm, and contentment.
Savoring
The ability to actively appreciate and enjoy the positive experiences in one's life.
Positive Psychotherapy
A therapeutic approach based on positive psychology principles that focuses on a person's strengths and building positive emotions, cognitions, and behaviors.
Post-Traumatic Growth
Positive psychological change experienced as a result of the struggle with highly challenging life circumstances.
Self-Determination Theory (SDT)
A motivational theory in psychology that concerns people's inherent growth tendencies and innate psychological needs.
Broaden-and-Build Theory
A theory proposing that positive emotions broaden one's awareness and encourage novel, varied, and exploratory thoughts and actions.
