Communication Networks in Organizations

Chain Network
The chain network is a vertical communication line where information passes from the top down or the bottom up in a sequential manner. An example would be a military organization where orders are passed down from high command to the troops.
Wheel Network
The wheel network relies on a central figure to act as the conduit for all communication. In a sales team, the manager might receive all feedback from sales representatives and then provide directions based on that feedback.
Star Network
Similar to the wheel network, the star network has a central hub for communication flow. This could be seen in a tech support team where all information is transferred via the team leader.
All-Channel Network
An all-channel network allows for everyone to communicate with each other equally, often found in flat organizations. An example is a start-up company where all team members collaborate and communicate freely without a rigid structure.
Circle Network
In a circle network, members communicate with others in a fixed pattern of sequence which is usually with their immediate team members. For example, in a small department, information might flow from person to person in meetings.
Y Network
The Y network is a combination where a central authority communicates to a select few who in turn pass the information to separate groups. An NGO might operate this way, with headquarters passing information to regional leaders who then inform their local teams.
