Ethical Communication

Flashcards
0/8
Confidentiality
Maintaining confidentiality means not disclosing sensitive information entrusted by others. An ethical dilemma arises when there's a pressure to reveal such information. A lawyer discussing a client's case details with outsiders is a case in point.
Transparency
Transparency is about being open in the communication process. An ethical concern is nondisclosure of information that affects stakeholders. For instance, a company not being upfront about a data breach may be considered unethical communication.
Inclusivity
Ethical communication should be inclusive, considering a diverse audience. An ethical issue is excluding or marginalizing certain groups within communication. For instance, a company's ad campaign that only features one demographic and ignores the diversity of its consumer base is not inclusive.
Respect for Others
Communication should demonstrate respect for others, valuing their thoughts and feelings. Ethical issues occur when communicators use derogatory language or stereotypes. An individual making negative assumptions about a coworker's competence based on race is disrespectful.
Privacy
Ethical communication must respect individuals' right to privacy. An example of an ethical issue is sharing someone's personal information without consent. For example, a university disclosing a student's grades publicly would breach privacy norms.
Accuracy
Accuracy in communication means conveying information correctly and checking facts. An ethical issue would involve the intentional distortion of facts. An advertising company exaggerating the benefits of a product misleads consumers.
Honesty
Honesty in communication involves sharing information truthfully and without deception. An ethical issue may arise if a communicator deliberately spreads misinformation or omits crucial facts. For example, a journalist selectively reporting facts to sway public opinion is unethical.
Accountability
Accountability implies taking responsibility for one's communication acts. Communicators face ethical issues if they refuse to accept the consequences of their messages. A politician not taking responsibility for the outcomes of their hate speech exemplifies this.
