Crop Rotation
A pattern where different crops are rotated on the same land across different seasons or years to improve soil health and reduce pests and diseases.
Strip Cropping
A pattern where crops are grown in alternating strips along the land contours, helping in erosion control and reducing water runoff.
Cover Cropping
A farming practice where crops are planted primarily to manage soil erosion, soil fertility, and pests, rather than for harvest.
Polyculture
A planting pattern where multiple crop species are grown in the same space at the same time, promoting biodiversity and resilience against pests and diseases.
Green Manure
The practice of growing specific crops, such as legumes, that are then plowed into the soil to act as a nutrient-rich, organic fertilizer for future crops.
Alley Cropping
A system in which perennial, preferably leguminous trees or shrubs are grown simultaneously with an arable crop. The trees, managed as hedgerows, help to enhance nutrient uptake and improve soil fertility.
Monoculture
A pattern where only one type of crop is planted year after year on the same land, leading to a depletion of soil nutrients and increased vulnerability to pests.
Continuous Cropping
A farming practice where agricultural land is used to grow crops continuously without leaving it fallow, which can lead to soil degradation over time.
Intercropping
Growing two or more crops in proximity on the same field during a single season to promote interactions advantageous to at least one of the crops.
Sequential Cropping
Planting a sequence of different crops on the same land within the same year to maximize the use of growing seasons and increase yield.
