Flashcards
0/15
Grazing Management
The strategic planning of livestock grazing to improve pasture growth, livestock health, and ecological sustainability of the land.
Biochar
A form of charcoal produced from plant matter and stored in the soil as a means of removing carbon from the atmosphere. It also improves soil fertility and agricultural productivity.
Aquaponics
A combination of aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (the soil-less growing of plants) that grows fish and plants together in one integrated system.
Precision Agriculture
Farming management concept based on observing, measuring, and responding to inter and intra-field variability in crops to optimize returns while preserving resources.
Permaculture
An ethical design system applied to agriculture that mimics the patterns and relationships found in nature to create sustainable ecosystems.
Green Manuring
The practice of planting cover crops that are primarily used for adding nutrients and organic matter to the soil. These crops are typically plowed under and incorporated into the soil while green or shortly after flowering.
Cover Cropping
Growing of plants for the purpose of soil improvement, erosion control, and weed suppression. Cover crops are usually not intended for harvest.
Rainwater Harvesting
Collecting and storing rainwater for on-site use instead of allowing it to run off. It's used for irrigation, livestock, and even as drinking water after proper treatment.
Organic Farming
A chemical-free farming method that uses natural inputs like compost, manure, and biopesticides to sustain soil health, ecosystems, and people's health.
Agroforestry
This practice integrates trees and shrubs into crop and animal farming systems to create environmental benefits, such as enhancing biodiversity and reducing erosion.
Polyculture Farming
Growing multiple crops in close proximity which can include intercropping, companion planting, and mixed cropping, enhancing diversity and reducing pests.
Alternative Energy Use in Agriculture
The use of renewable energy sources like solar, wind, and bioenergy to power agricultural operations which reduces fossil fuel consumption and carbon footprint.
Crop Rotation
It involves changing the type of crop grown on a particular piece of land from season to season. This helps to improve soil health and reduce pests without using chemicals.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
IPM aims to manage pests using environmentally sensitive approaches such as biological control, habitat manipulation, and modification of cultural practices.
Conservation Tillage
A farming practice that leaves the previous year's crop residue on fields before and after planting the next crop to reduce soil erosion and runoff.
