Inspection and Surveillance
Activities carried out by regulatory bodies to check plants and plant products for compliance with phytosanitary regulations and to monitor pest presence.
Phytosanitary Certificate
A document attesting that a shipment of plants or plant products has been inspected according to appropriate procedures and found to be free of harmful pests and diseases; required for the international movement of such goods.
Prohibited Material
Plants, plant products, or other regulated articles that are not allowed entry into a country due to the high risk they pose of introducing pests or diseases.
Treatment for Pest Eradication
A procedure applied to plants or plant products to eliminate or neutralize a pest, which may include chemical, physical, or biological methods.
Regulated Non-Quarantine Pests
Pests that are not quarantined but still regulated due to their potential to adversely affect the quality of plants or plant products.
Post-Entry Quarantine
The isolation and observation of imported plants or plant products under controlled conditions, following their entry into the country.
Pest-Free Area
An area in which a specific pest does not occur and which is officially recognized by other countries, facilitating trade of plants and plant products.
Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures (SPS)
A set of measures implemented by governments to protect human, animal, and plant life and health from risks posed by pests and contaminants.
Area of Low Pest Prevalence
A region in which a specific pest occurs at low levels and is officially controlled, impacting the phytosanitary measures applied to exported goods from this area.
Import Permit
A legal document issued by the importing country that specifies the conditions under which certain plants can be imported, including any treatments required prior to movement.
Host Plant
A plant that can support the life cycle of a particular pest or pathogen, often subject to specific regulations to prevent spread.
Biosecurity
Procedures and policies to protect the economy, environment, and human health from risks associated with pests and diseases.
Pathogen-Free Certification
A certification that indicates plants or plant products have been tested and found free of specific regulated pathogens.
Quarantine Pest
A pest of potential economic importance to the area endangered and not yet present there, or present but not widely distributed and being officially controlled.
Pest Risk Analysis (PRA)
The process of evaluating biological or other scientific and economic evidence to determine whether an organism is a pest and the potential for its introduction and spread.
