Flashcards
0/20
Newcastle Disease
This viral disease primarily affects birds but can cause mild conjunctivitis and flu-like symptoms in humans. Prevention includes vaccination of poultry and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
Psittacosis (Ornithosis)
Caused by Chlamydia psittaci, transmitted from birds to humans by inhaling dried secretions. Use PPE and practice good hygiene to prevent transmission.
Mycobacteriosis (Avian Tuberculosis)
This bacterial infection is caused by Mycobacterium avium and can be transmitted to humans. Prevent the disease by wearing PPE and practicing farm sanitation.
Q Fever
Caused by Coxiella burnetii, transmitted to humans through inhalation of barnyard dust contaminated by infected animals. Prevention includes control of dust and use of PPE.
West Nile Virus
Though primarily transmitted by mosquitoes, infected birds are reservoirs. Prevention: control mosquito populations and avoid mosquito bites.
Pasteurellosis
Human infection with Pasteurella multocida can occur from bites or scratches from poultry. Prevention includes prompt wound care and avoiding rough handling of birds.
E. coli Infections
Escherichia coli can be transmitted through contaminated poultry and products. Prevent infection by cooking meat thoroughly and practicing good hygiene.
Histoplasmosis
Caused by Histoplasma fungus, which grows in bird droppings. Precautions include wearing PPE when around bird habitats and proper cleanup of bird droppings.
Listeriosis
Caused by Listeria monocytogenes, this disease can be contracted from contaminated poultry. Prevention includes thorough cooking and avoiding cross-contamination.
Cryptosporidiosis
This parasitic disease can be transmitted via contact with infected poultry and contaminated water/food. Prevention: proper hand hygiene and water treatment.
Colibacillosis
Caused by pathogenic E. coli found in poultry, which can cause disease in humans from contaminated meat. Prevention strategies include good cooking practices and farm hygiene.
Salmonellosis
Caused by Salmonella bacteria, it can be transmitted to humans by consuming contaminated poultry products. Prevention includes proper cooking and kitchen hygiene.
Fowl Typhoid
Caused by Salmonella Gallinarum, this is a disease of birds that doesn't usually affect humans. Biosecurity prevents outbreaks in poultry.
Campylobacteriosis
Caused by Campylobacter bacteria, mainly through handling raw poultry or eating undercooked meat. It's preventable with proper food handling and cooking procedures.
Botulism
Caused by Clostridium botulinum toxin found in improperly stored or canned foods, including poultry. Prevent by proper food processing, cooking, and storage.
Staphylococcal Infections
Staphylococcus aureus can be present on poultry and transmitted through handling or consumption of contaminated meat. Practice good kitchen hygiene and cook thoroughly to prevent.
Infectious Coryza
A respiratory disease in poultry, not typically zoonotic, but biosecurity measures help to prevent any potential spread and maintain poultry health.
Erysipelas
A bacterial infection caused by Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae that can spread to humans handling infected birds. Use gloves and practice personal hygiene for prevention.
Bird Fancier’s Lung (Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis)
This allergic reaction is caused by inhaling bird proteins found in droppings and feathers. Prevent the disease by regularly cleaning bird enclosures and using appropriate masks.
Avian Influenza
This viral infection can spread from birds to humans. Prevent by avoiding direct contact with infected birds, and ensure good biosecurity practices on poultry farms.
