Flashcards
0/20
Cross Staff
A simple surveying instrument used to measure right angles. It is typically composed of an upright with a pair of horizontal crosspieces.
Surveyor's Wheel
Also known as a measuring wheel, it is a device for measuring distance. The wheel rotates and, with each revolution, measures a specific length of ground covered.
Surveyor's Chain
A piece of equipment composed of 100 links, used for measuring long distances. The total length of the chain is 66 feet, also known as one surveyor's chain or 4 rods.
Optical Square
A small, hand-held device used in surveying to provide a quick method of establishing or checking right angles (90 degrees).
Theodolite
A precision optical instrument for measuring angles in the horizontal and vertical planes. Primarily used to set out right angles and straight lines on construction sites.
Tripod
A three-legged stand that is used to support surveying instruments at a stable and specified height. Essential for precision in measurements.
Dumpy Level
A simple optical survey instrument with a telescope fixed in its two supports; it is used for leveling and the measurement of land areas.
GPS
Global Positioning System - a satellite-based navigation system that allows the determination of the precise geographic location. Used in construction for site layout and large scale mapping.
Tape Measure
A flexible ruler used to measure distance and length. Tape measures are often used in construction for quick linear measurement tasks.
Benchmark
A fixed physical point with a known elevation used as a reference for determining other points' elevations in surveying.
Clinometer
An instrument used for measuring angles of slope or tilt, elevation or depression of an object with respect to gravity. Useful in the construction of inclined surfaces.
Alidade
A device that allows one to sight a distant object and use the line of sight to perform a task. This can be the measurement of angles or as a directional device when drawing a map.
Transit Level
A type of level that combines the capabilities of a theodolite and a level to measure both horizontal and vertical angles. Used for setting horizontal angles and checking elevations.
Automatic Level
A self-leveling instrument used to establish or check points in the same horizontal plane. It is more precise and easier to use than a traditional level.
Laser Level
A control tool that emits a laser beam along the horizontal or vertical axis. It is used in construction to transfer levels, align work, and provide a true horizontal or vertical reference.
Level
A surveying instrument used to establish or verify points in the same horizontal plane. It is used in construction for establishing elevation.
Rod Level
A graduated rod used in conjunction with survey levels to measure vertical distances. Commonly used to establish or check elevations during construction.
Prism
Used in conjunction with electronic distance measuring (EDM) instruments to reflect the signal back to the EDM for distance calculation.
Plumb Bob
A weight with a pointed tip on the bottom, suspended from a string and used as a vertical reference line. This ancient tool is essential in surveying to establish a true vertical.
Total Station
An electronic/optical instrument used for measuring angles, distances, and coordinates. Commonly used in construction for layout, verification, and as-built recording.
