Common Channel Signaling (CCS)
Common channel signaling is a form of out-of-band signaling where a separate, dedicated channel is used for the exchange of signaling information for multiple traffic channels. Example: ISDN's D channel used for control and signaling purposes.
Circuit Switching Signaling
Circuit switching signaling is used to establish a dedicated channel or circuit between two parties for the duration of a session. Example: The establishment of a traditional telephone call utilizing a dedicated physical line.
In-band Signaling
In-band signaling involves the transmission of control information within the same band or channel as the main data. Example: DTMF tones used in telephone networks to indicate the dialed numbers.
Out-of-band Signaling
Out-of-band signaling refers to the sending of control signals on a separate channel from the data traffic. Example: SS7 protocol used in public switched telephone networks to set up and manage phone calls.
Signaling System No. 7 (SS7)
SS7 is a set of telephony signaling protocols that provides out-of-band signaling for the call setup, routing, and control in public switched telephone networks. Examples: used for local and international call routing, SMS, and other services.
