Layers of Soil
5
Flashcards
0/5
O Horizon
The topmost layer of soil, primarily composed of organic materials including decomposed leaves, twigs, and other plant materials, humus.
C Horizon
Consists of slightly broken-up bedrock, lacks the properties of O, A, and B horizons since it is influenced less by the soil-forming processes; contains rock fragments, very little organic material.
A Horizon
Known as the topsoil; rich in humus and minerals, typically darker than lower layers, and has a high concentration of organic matter and microorganisms.
E Horizon
Characterized by the leaching of organic acids, clay, iron, or aluminum oxides, which leaves a concentration of sand and silt particles of quartz or other resistant materials - known as eluviation.
B Horizon
Commonly known as the subsoil; rich in minerals that leached (moved down) from the A or E Horizons and were redeposited within this layer, known as illuviation.
