Horizon O
This is a surface layer rich in organic matter, including fallen leaves, twigs, and decomposed organisms. It plays a crucial role in supplying nutrients to the ecosystem and acts as a natural mulch.
Horizon A
Often referred to as topsoil, it is the layer where organic material is mixed with mineral particles. Horizon A is crucial for plant growth due to its high nutrient content and is subject to erosion and leaching.
Horizon E
This eluviation (leaching) layer is lighter in color due to the loss of minerals and organic matter. It's significant for its role in the sorting and transportation of soil particles.
Horizon B
Known as the subsoil, this layer accumulates leached minerals and nutrients, particularly clay, iron, and aluminum oxides. It is significant for storing these substances, which can be returned to the upper layers through various soil processes.
Horizon C
Composed of partially disintegrated and weathered parent material, Horizon C shows the development of the soil's geological and chemical characteristics. Although it is not significantly affected by soil forming processes, it provides insight into the soil's formation over time.
