Flashcards
0/15
pH
Normal value: 7.35 – 7.45; Acidosis if <7.35, Alkalosis if >7.45.
Lactate
Normal value: 0.5-1.0 mmol/L; Elevated in tissue hypoxia, may indicate sepsis or shock if >2 mmol/L.
Albumin
Normal value: 3.5-5.0 g/dL; Hypoalbuminemia can cause artefactual acidosis, hyperalbuminemia can cause artefactual alkalosis.
Magnesium (Mg2+)
Normal value: 1.7-2.2 mg/dL; Hypermagnesemia can depress the nervous system, hypomagnesemia can lead to neuromuscular symptoms.
Potassium (K+)
Normal value: 3.5-5.0 mEq/L; Hyperkalemia can cause cardiac arrhythmias, hypokalemia can also disrupt heart rhythms.
Anion Gap (AG)
Normal value: 3-11 mEq/L; Elevated AG suggests presence of metabolic acidosis with an unmeasured anion.
Total Carbon Dioxide Content (TCO2)
Normal value: 23-29 mEq/L; High levels may indicate respiratory or metabolic alkalosis, low levels indicate respiratory or metabolic acidosis.
Partial Pressure of Carbon Dioxide (PaCO2)
Normal value: 35 – 45 mmHg; Respiratory acidosis if >45 mmHg, Respiratory alkalosis if <35 mmHg.
Base Excess (BE)
Normal value: -2 to +2 mEq/L; Negative value indicates acidosis, positive value indicates alkalosis.
Chloride (Cl-)
Normal value: 96-106 mEq/L; Hyperchloremia can lead to acidosis, hypochloremia can lead to alkalosis.
Calcium (Ca2+)
Normal value: 8.5-10.5 mg/dL; Hypercalcemia can cause muscle weakness and confusion, hypocalcemia can cause tetany and cardiac issues.
Sodium (Na+)
Normal value: 135-145 mEq/L; Hypernatremia can contribute to dehydration, hyponatremia can lead to edema.
Bicarbonate (HCO3-)
Normal value: 22 – 26 mEq/L; Metabolic acidosis if <22 mEq/L, Metabolic alkalosis if >26 mEq/L.
Partial Pressure of Oxygen (PaO2)
Normal value: 75 – 100 mmHg; Hypoxemia if <75 mmHg, Hyperoxia if >100 mmHg.
Oxygen Saturation (SaO2)
Normal value: 95-100%; Hypoxemia if <95%, Concern for oxygen delivery if <90%.
