Lung Cancer Staging
8
Flashcards
0/8
Stage 0 (Carcinoma in Situ)
Abnormal cells are present in the lining of the lung. Prognosis is high, with a 5-year survival rate of about 70% to 90%.
Stage I
Cancer is localized within the lung and usually smaller than 4 cm. Prognosis varies but 5-year survival rate ranges from about 45% to 49% for IA and 30% to 35% for IB.
Stage II
Cancer has spread to nearby lymph nodes or chest wall. Prognosis: 5-year survival rate is approximately 30% for IIA and 30% to 31% for IIB.
Stage IIIA
Cancer has spread further to lymph nodes and may also affect other structures like the chest wall or diaphragm. Prognosis: 5-year survival rate varies between 14% to 24%.
Stage IIIB
Cancer has spread to lymph nodes above the collarbone or has invaded other organs such as the heart or trachea. Prognosis: 5-year survival rate is about 9% to 10%.
Stage IV
Cancer has spread (metastasized) to distant organs such as bones, liver, or brain. Prognosis: 5-year survival rate is around 1% to 5%, depending on sub-stage IVa or IVb.
Recurrent Lung Cancer
Cancer has returned after treatment. Prognosis depends on where the cancer recurs and what treatments are available.
Stage IA
Tumor is less than 3 cm, has not spread to lymph nodes and does not involve major bronchi. Prognosis: 5-year survival rate is 68% to 92%.
