Flashcards
0/18
Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infection
Characteristics: Common viral infection causing bronchiolitis, pneumonia in children. Treatment: Supportive care, oxygen for severe cases. Prognosis: Usually self-limiting, severe in high-risk groups.
Respiratory Distress Syndrome
Characteristics: Lack of surfactant leading to collapsed alveoli in newborns. Treatment: Surfactant replacement therapy, mechanical ventilation. Prognosis: Improving with advancements in neonatal care.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
Characteristics: Intermittent upper airway obstruction during sleep causing disrupted sleep. Treatment: Adenotonsillectomy, CPAP for older children. Prognosis: Good with treatment, can affect growth and behavior if untreated.
Bronchial Asthma
Characteristics: Hyperresponsiveness of the airways leading to episodic wheezing, shortness of breath. Treatment: Lifestyle changes, inhaled corticosteroids, rescue inhalers. Prognosis: Chronic condition, but controllable with proper management.
Bronchiolitis
Characteristics: Infection of the small airways, often by RSV, leading to cough and difficulty breathing. Treatment: Supportive care, oxygen, sometimes antivirals. Prognosis: Good, with most recovering fully.
Cystic Fibrosis
Characteristics: Genetic disorder causing thick mucus, affecting lungs and other organs. Treatment: Chest physiotherapy, pancreatic enzymes, CFTR modulators. Prognosis: Lifespan has increased with advancements in treatment.
Laryngomalacia
Characteristics: Soft laryngeal structures leading to stridor that worsens with crying, feeding. Treatment: Often self-resolving, severe cases may require surgery. Prognosis: Good, typically resolves by age 2.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
Characteristics: Sudden and unexplained death of an infant younger than 1 year. Treatment: Prevention with safe sleeping practices. Prognosis: Incidence reduced with back-sleeping recommendations.
Pneumonia
Characteristics: Infection causing inflammation of the air sacs in one or both lungs. Treatment: Antibiotics for bacterial; supportive care for viral. Prognosis: Often good with treatment, but severity varies.
Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
Characteristics: Bacterial infection causing severe coughing fits followed by a 'whooping' sound. Treatment: Antibiotics, supportive care. Prognosis: Can be serious in infants but preventable with vaccination.
Foreign Body Aspiration
Characteristics: Inhalation of objects leading to choking, potential airway obstruction. Treatment: Removal by bronchoscopy, emergency intervention if needed. Prognosis: Good if object is promptly removed without complications.
Croup
Characteristics: Inflammation around the larynx, trachea, causing a barking cough. Treatment: Corticosteroids, nebulized adrenaline. Prognosis: Typically resolves within a week with treatment.
Tuberculosis (TB)
Characteristics: Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection causing chronic cough, weight loss. Treatment: Long-term antibiotics regimen. Prognosis: Good with complete course of treatment, drug resistance is a concern.
Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia
Characteristics: Chronic lung condition of premature infants with abnormal development of lung tissue. Treatment: Respiratory support, diuretics, inhaled steroids. Prognosis: Increased risk of respiratory issues later in life.
Pleural Effusion
Characteristics: Accumulation of fluid between the layers of tissue lining the lungs and chest cavity. Treatment: Thoracentesis, chest tube placement, antibiotics if infectious. Prognosis: Depends on underlying cause, can resolve with appropriate therapy.
Epiglottitis
Characteristics: Inflammation of the epiglottis, can cause life-threatening airway obstruction. Treatment: Airway management, antibiotics. Prognosis: Can improve rapidly with appropriate treatment.
Tracheomalacia
Characteristics: Weakness of tracheal walls causing collapsing airway and breathing issues. Treatment: Usually self-improving, aortopexy or stenting in severe cases. Prognosis: Generally favorable, improves with growth.
Asthma
Characteristics: Chronic inflammation of the airways causing wheezing, breathlessness. Treatment: Inhaled corticosteroids, bronchodilators. Prognosis: Often controllable, can be a lifelong condition.
