Flashcards
0/20
Supine Position
Purpose: Provide general access to the anterior body; Considerations: Support the patient's limbs and maintain proper alignment.
Reverse Trendelenburg Position
Purpose: Improve access to upper abdominal organs; Considerations: Prevent patient sliding and monitor for changes in blood pressure.
Lithotomy Position
Purpose: Access perineal area; Considerations: Avoid nerve damage by using proper positioning aids and monitoring limb placement.
Sims’ Position
Purpose: Perform rectal and vaginal examinations; Considerations: Position patient on left side with right leg flexed and provide adequate support.
Lateral Decubitus Position
Purpose: Access to side-specific thoracic and renal areas; Considerations: Pad pressure points adequately and monitor for under body weight pressure effects.
Standing Position
Purpose: Mainly for minor procedures on the anterior body; Considerations: Ensure the patient is stable and supported to prevent falls.
Prone Position
Purpose: Allow access to the posterior body; Considerations: Ensure open airways and adequate chest expansion, and protect pressure points.
Beach Chair Position
Purpose: Allows shoulder arthroscopy; Considerations: Ensure secure bracing of the patient and check for potential cerebral perfusion issues.
Dorsal Recumbent Position
Purpose: Facilitate various examinations and minor procedures; Considerations: Place patient flat on their back with legs bent and feet flat on the table.
Trendelenburg Position
Purpose: Improve access to pelvic organs; Considerations: Monitor patient for hemodynamic changes and ensure secure positioning to avoid shifting.
Semi-Fowler’s Position
Purpose: Enhance patient comfort and respiratory function; Considerations: Carefully support the head and arms, and use care to prevent sliding.
Lateral Position
Purpose: Allow surgical access to the hip, kidney, and lung; Considerations: Protect the downside limb from compression and monitor for respiratory compromise.
Jackknife Position
Purpose: Expose the perianal region; Considerations: Prevent abdominal compression and protect knees and ankles from pressure.
Knee-chest Position
Purpose: Grants access to the sacral and rectal areas; Considerations: Avoid raising the buttocks too high to prevent pressure on the diaphragm.
Fowler’s Position
Purpose: Eases breathing in patients; Considerations: Provide support for the back and arms, and prevent slippage.
Genupectoral Position
Purpose: Provides exposure for procedures involving the rectum and vagina; Considerations: Ensure knees are adequately padded and the head is turned to one side for breathing.
Rose Position
Purpose: Used for lung and thyroid surgeries; Considerations: Use a slight reverse Trendelenburg position and support the head and neck properly.
Semi-prone Position
Purpose: Combines benefits of prone and lateral positions; Considerations: Position the lower arm to avoid compression and ensure good thoracic and pelvic alignment.
Concorde Position
Purpose: Enhances exposure of the intervertebral spaces; Considerations: Maintain neutral alignment of the head and spine, and support the abdomen to prevent pressure.
Lloyd-Davies Position
Purpose: Ideal for colorectal surgeries; Considerations: Combine the use of stirrups with Trendelenburg positioning for optimal exposure and access.
