Bar/Bat Mitzvah
A Jewish coming of age ritual where at 13 (for boys, called Bar Mitzvah) or 12 (for girls, called Bat Mitzvah), a child becomes accountable for their actions and becomes a full member of the Jewish community.
Confession
In Catholic Christianity, penitents confess their sins to a priest and receive absolution. This ritual emphasizes the human need for forgiveness and the priest acts as a mediator between the individual and God.
Sabbath
In Judaism, it's the weekly day of rest commemorating God's day of rest after creation. It is dedicated to prayer, family, and rest, emphasizing community and tradition.
Initiation Rites
Ceremonies or rituals marking the entrance or acceptance into a group or society. They may include various forms of education, trials, and the imparting of key knowledge which often have a transformative power within the culture.
Animal Sacrifice
The killing of an animal as part of a religious ritual. In many cultures, it's believed to propitiate or appease gods, spirits, or ancestral beings, and may also be part of feasts or communal meals.
Sun Dance
A ceremony practiced by some Indigenous peoples of North America, primarily those of the Plains cultures. It is performed to honor the sun and to ensure continuity of all life. Sometimes involves personal sacrifice and renewal.
Baptism
A Christian sacrament signifying spiritual cleansing and rebirth. Symbolizes the individual's acceptance into the faith and the washing away of original sin.
Meditation
A practice used in various religions, such as Buddhism and Hinduism, for settling the mind and achieving higher states of consciousness. Utilized to reach enlightenment, reduce suffering, and improve spiritual well-being.
Zazen
A form of seated meditation in Zen Buddhism. Practitioners seek to forget all judgmental thoughts, ideas, and images in order to reach a state of pure mindfulness or 'no-mind'.
Thanksgiving
A widely observed holiday across several cultures, often having historical religious roots. It is a day set aside to express gratitude and appreciation for the blessings received, usually involving a festive meal.
Salat
The ritual Islamic prayer performed five times a day as a means of direct communication with Allah. Demonstrates submission to and dependence on God.
Sacraments
In Christianity, particularly Catholicism, sacraments are sacred rites recognized as of particular importance and efficacy. Each of the seven sacraments confers grace upon the recipient and marks different stages of a Christian's spiritual life.

A rite of passage in some Native American cultures. It is a spiritual journey into the wilderness seeking personal growth and spiritual guidance from the spirit world.
Eucharist
Also known as Holy Communion, in Christianity, is a sacrament commemorating the Last Supper of Jesus Christ with his apostles. Believers consume bread and wine signifying the body and blood of Christ to be in communion with him.
Smudging
A ceremonial practice found in various Native American cultures, and also in some Neo-Pagan traditions; it involves the burning of sacred herbs for spiritual cleansing or blessing.
Fasting
An act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time. Used in many religions as a means of purification, self-discipline, and spiritual reflection.
Pilgrimage
A spiritual journey to a holy or significant place in various traditions. It allows believers to express their devotion, seek atonement, and experience a sense of community and connection.
Hajj
Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca that every Muslim is required to make at least once in their lifetime if they are able to do so. It represents the unity of the Muslim community and their submission to Allah.
Puja
Hindu ritual of worship involving offerings to deities, such as flowers or food, and often includes prayers and songs. It shows reverence and devotion and is a means of receiving a deity's blessing.
Yoga
A Hindu spiritual and ascetic discipline, including breath control, meditation, and the adoption of specific bodily postures. It is widely practiced for health and relaxation and aims to unify the self with the Supreme Being.
