Flashcards
0/8
Elements tend to be perceived as part of a pattern if they follow a continuous direction or shape.
Principle of Continuity
Elements are perceived as either the 'figure' (the focused-on element) or the 'ground' (the background on which the figure rests).
Figure-Ground Principle
Objects that are close to each other tend to be grouped together.
Principle of Proximity
Elements tend to be perceived as grouped together when they are similar to each other.
Principle of Similarity
When parts of a whole picture are missing, our perception fills in the visual gap.
Principle of Closure
Perceptual experience where the perceptual whole is different or more complex than the simple sum of its parts.
Law of Prägnanz
Parts of a visual image that move in the same direction and at the same speed are seen as parts of a single object.
Principle of Common Fate
Experience shapes the way we perceive groups. We perceive elements in a way that conforms to a familiar pattern or shape.
Principle of Past Experience
