Central Executive
Function: Controls attention and coordinates other mental functions. Description: The supervisory system, responsible for task management and cognitive control in working memory.
Phonological Loop
Function: Processes verbal and auditory information. Description: Comprised of two parts, the phonological store (inner ear) which holds words you hear and the articulatory rehearsal process (inner voice) which repeats word sounds to keep them in working memory.
Visuospatial Sketchpad
Function: Processes visual and spatial information. Description: Stores and manipulates visual and spatial data, essentially acting as an internal 'scratch pad' for visual scenes and spatial layouts.
Episodic Buffer
Function: Integrates information from different modalities. Description: It's a temporary storage system that combines visual, spatial, and verbal information with a sense of time, sequencing events into coherent episodes.
Long-Term Memory
Function: Stores information indefinitely. Description: Although not a part of the working memory model per se, it interacts with working memory to provide background information and retrieve past experiences.
