General Dental Practitioner; the primary dental care provider for patients of all ages who takes responsibility for the diagnosis, treatment, management, and overall coordination of services to meet patients' oral health needs.

Intra-Oral Examination; a comprehensive assessment conducted inside the mouth to check the health of the teeth, palate, gums, and other soft tissues.
NPO
Nil Per Os; a Latin phrase that translates to 'nothing by mouth', used to give instructions to refrain from eating or drinking before certain medical or dental procedures.
TMJ
Temporomandibular Joint; the joint connecting the lower jawbone to the skull.
QID
Quater in die; a Latin term for 'four times a day', used in prescription writing.
EOE
Extra-Oral Examination; a visual and tactile assessment of the face, neck, lips, and other areas outside the mouth.
OPG
Orthopantomogram; a panoramic X-ray of the upper and lower jaw.
DMFT
Decayed, Missing, and Filled Teeth; a measurement index for dental caries in epidemiology.
RCT
Root Canal Therapy; a treatment for removing the pulp of a tooth to eliminate infection.
MOD
Mesio-occluso-distal; a type of dental restoration that involves the mesial, occlusal, and distal surfaces of a tooth.
DDS
Doctor of Dental Surgery; a degree held by dentists after completing dental school.
RDH
Registered Dental Hygienist; a licensed dental professional who specializes in preventive oral health.
DI
Decay Index; a standardized score used to describe the level of tooth decay.

Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs; an index used for periodontal screening to assess an individual’s treatment needs based on their periodontal health.

Centric Relation; the jaw's position when the joints are in their most orthopedically stable position.

Complete Blood Count; a blood test that can provide important information about the kinds of cells in the blood, such as red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. It may be done preoperatively in some dental procedures.

Vertical Dimension of Occlusion; the upper and lower teeth’s position when the mouth is closed and the teeth are biting together.
DOE
Date of Eruption; the date when a tooth emerges through the gums and becomes visible in the mouth.
PCDL
Primary Chronic Gingival Disease of Childhood; a classification of periodontal disease seen in children that is unrelated to systemic disease and characterized by localized or generalized gingival inflammation.
BID
Bis in die; Latin term for 'twice a day', used in prescription writing.
LA
Local Anesthesia; medication used to prevent pain in a specific area of the mouth during dental treatment.
DMD
Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Medicine; equivalent to DDS, a degree held by dentists.
SRP
Scaling and Root Planing; a deep cleaning procedure used to treat periodontal disease by removing plaque and tartar from the tooth surfaces and cleaning the roots of the teeth.
