Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, changes in urine output. Treatments: Blood pressure medications, dietary changes, treatment of underlying conditions, dialysis in advanced stages. Potential Causes: Diabetes, hypertension, recurrent kidney infections.
Acute Kidney Injury (AKI)
Symptoms: Sudden decrease in kidney function, swelling of legs, fatigue. Treatments: Treatment of underlying causes, dialysis if necessary, fluids and medications to manage symptoms. Potential Causes: Severe dehydration, blood loss, drug overdose.
Renal Tubular Acidosis
Symptoms: Fatigue, muscle weakness, nephrocalcinosis. Treatments: Alkaline medication, dietary changes, supplements for electrolyte imbalances. Potential Causes: Inherited disorders, autoimmune diseases, chronic kidney conditions.
Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (FSGS)
Symptoms: Protein in urine, swelling in body parts like legs and feet, low blood albumin levels. Treatments: Steroids, immunosuppressive drugs, plasma exchange. Potential Causes: Idiopathic or secondary to other diseases like HIV, obesity, or hypertension.
Renal Artery Stenosis
Symptoms: High blood pressure, fluid retention, decreased kidney function. Treatments: Medications to control blood pressure, angioplasty or surgery. Potential Causes: Atherosclerosis, fibromuscular dysplasia.
Nephrotic Syndrome
Symptoms: Severe swelling, particularly in the ankles and feet, foamy urine, weight gain due to excess fluid retention. Treatments: Corticosteroids, diuretics, blood pressure medications, possibly blood thinners. Potential Causes: Minimal change disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, membranous nephropathy.
Interstitial Nephritis
Symptoms: Decreased urine output, fatigue, nausea. Treatments: Corticosteroids, stopping offending medications, dialysis if severe. Potential Causes: Medication reactions, infections, autoimmune diseases.
Hydronephrosis
Symptoms: Sudden or intense pain in the back or side, nausea and vomiting, urinary problems. Treatments: Addressing the underlying cause, possible surgical intervention, catheter placement. Potential Causes: Ureteral obstruction, kidney stones, tumors.
Alport Syndrome
Symptoms: Blood in urine, hearing loss, vision problems. Treatments: Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, transplant in severe cases. Potential Causes: Genetic mutation affecting collagen in kidneys.
Renal Cell Carcinoma
Symptoms: Blood in urine, persistent pain on one side, unexplained weight loss. Treatments: Surgery, targeted therapy, immunotherapy. Potential Causes: Smoking, obesity, hypertension.
Membranous Nephropathy
Symptoms: Swelling in ankles and feet, weight gain, foamy urine. Treatments: Immunotherapy, medications for symptom management, angiotensin inhibitors. Potential Causes: Autoimmune diseases, infections, certain medications.
IgA Nephropathy
Symptoms: Blood in urine, flu-like symptoms following upper respiratory or gastrointestinal infections, high blood pressure. Treatments: Blood pressure medications, fish oil, steroids or other immunosuppressive agents. Potential Causes: IgA immune complexes deposited in the kidneys.
Glomerulonephritis
Symptoms: Blood in urine, foamy urine, high blood pressure. Treatments: Corticosteroids, immune-suppressing drugs, blood pressure medications. Potential Causes: Infections, autoimmune diseases, vasculitis.
Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD)
Symptoms: High blood pressure, back or side pain, headaches. Treatments: Pain management, blood pressure control, cyst reduction treatments. Potential Causes: Genetic disorder.
Minimal Change Disease
Symptoms: Abrupt onset of edema, especially in the ankles and around the eyes, protein in urine, possibly hypertension. Treatments: Corticosteroids, diuretics, possibly immunosuppressive drugs. Potential Causes: Often idiopathic, sometimes post-infection or associated with allergic reactions.
Diabetic Nephropathy
Symptoms: High blood pressure, increased urination, swelling in legs. Treatments: Management of diabetes, blood pressure control, special dietary needs. Potential Causes: Complication of diabetes.
Pyelonephritis
Symptoms: Fever and chills, painful urination, pain in the back or side below the ribs. Treatments: Antibiotics, hospitalization for severe cases, plenty of fluids. Potential Causes: Usually occurs due to a bacterial infection that has spread from the bladder to the kidneys.
Lupus Nephritis
Symptoms: Blood in urine, foamy urine, swelling in legs. Treatments: Immunosuppressive drugs, antimalarial drugs, high blood pressure medications. Potential Causes: Complication of systemic lupus erythematosus.
Kidney Stones
Symptoms: Severe pain in back or side, blood in urine, frequent urination. Treatments: Pain relievers, drinking water, medical procedures to remove or break up stones. Potential Causes: Dehydration, certain diets, genetic factors.
Horseshoe Kidney
Symptoms: Often no symptoms, but possible urinary tract infections, kidney stones, hydronephrosis. Treatments: Treatment of associated conditions, monitoring kidney function, possible surgery. Potential Causes: Congenital disorder where the kidneys fuse together during development in the womb.
