Arachnoid Mater
A delicate, web-like membrane that sits below the dura mater, providing a cushioning layer for the central nervous system, and housing the cerebrospinal fluid and the arachnoid villi for CSF reabsorption.
Pia Mater
The innermost layer that clings tightly to the surface of the brain and spinal cord, providing a barrier to protect the CNS and support the blood vessels supplying the brain.
Dura Mater
The outermost, tough, fibrous layer that attaches to the skull and vertebral canal, providing the primary protective barrier around the brain and spinal cord.
