Flashcards
0/9
Amygdala
Responsible for processing emotions such as fear, anger, and pleasure. It's essential for forming emotional memories.
Hippocampus
Crucial for the formation of new memories and is involved in learning. Also plays a role in spatial navigation.
Thalamus
Acts as the brain's relay station, directing sensory signals to the appropriate areas of the cortex. Also has roles in consciousness and sleep.
Hypothalamus
Regulates a variety of bodily functions including temperature, thirst, hunger, sleep, and emotional activity.
Cingulate Cortex
Involved in processing emotions and behavior regulation. It also helps to regulate autonomic motor function.
Mammillary Bodies
Involved in recollective memory. Damage to this structure can result in disorders of memory.
Olfactory Bulb
Involved in the sense of smell (olfaction) and links smell to emotion and memory.
Fornix
Acts as a major output tract for the hippocampus. It is important in memory processing and recall.
Basal Ganglia
Although not traditionally considered part of the limbic system, it interacts with the limbic structures to influence emotions, motivation, and movement.
