Sensory System Pathways
10
Flashcards
0/10
Spinothalamic Tract
Transmits pain, temperature, and crude touch sensations. Fibers enter the spinal cord and immediately synapse, then cross to the opposite side and ascend to the thalamus.
Gustatory Pathway
Transmits taste information from the tongue to the brain. It involves the cranial nerves VII (facial), IX (glossopharyngeal), and X (vagus), synapses in the gustatory nucleus of the brainstem, and then relays to the thalamus and gustatory cortex.
Auditory Pathway
Transmits sound from the cochlea to the primary auditory cortex. The pathway includes the cochlear nuclei, superior olivary nucleus, inferior colliculus, medial geniculate nucleus of the thalamus, and finally the auditory cortex.
Olfactory Pathway
This carries smell information from the nasal cavity. Sensory neurons project to the olfactory bulb, which then relays information to the olfactory cortex without going through the thalamus.
Trigeminal Sensory Pathway
Carries sensation from the face, including touch, pain, and temperature. The pathway enters the pons, synapses, and then some fibers cross while others remain ipsilateral before reaching the thalamus.
Somatosensory Pathway
Responsible for general body sensations such as touch, temperature, and pain. It involves peripheral nerves, the dorsal root ganglia, spinal cord, and finally to various somatosensory cortices in the brain after synapsing in the thalamus.
Posterior Spinocerebellar Tract
Transmits proprioceptive information from the lower body and legs to the cerebellum. It ascends ipsilaterally through the spinal cord to the cerebellum without crossing.
Anterior Spinocerebellar Tract
Conveys proprioceptive information from limbs and trunk to the cerebellum for subconscious coordination of movement. It crosses the midline in the spinal cord, ascends, then crosses again at the pons to enter the cerebellum ipsilaterally.
Dorsal Column-Medial Lemniscal Pathway
This pathway carries fine touch, vibration, and proprioception sensations. It ascends ipsilaterally in the dorsal columns of the spinal cord before synapsing in the medulla, then crossing (decussating) and ascending to the thalamus.
Visual Pathway
Conveys visual information from the retina to the visual cortex. The pathway involves the optic nerve, optic chiasm, optic tract, lateral geniculate nucleus, and optic radiations.
