Flashcards
0/6
Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
Mechanism: Temporary blockage of blood flow to the brain. Common causes: Blood clots, atherosclerosis. Outcomes: No lasting damage, warning sign for future strokes.
Lacunar Stroke
Mechanism: Ischemic stroke affecting small arteries. Common causes: Long-standing high blood pressure, diabetes. Outcomes: Can lead to specific syndromes, potential for good recovery.
Brain Stem Stroke
Mechanism: Ischemia or hemorrhage affecting the brain stem. Common causes: Arteriosclerosis, embolism. Outcomes: Can affect vital functions, causing severe and complex symptoms.
Cryptogenic Stroke
Mechanism: Stroke with undetermined cause despite evaluation. Common causes: Possibly related to atrial fibrillation or other undiagnosed conditions. Outcomes: Variable, depends on area and extent of brain affected.
Hemorrhagic Stroke
Mechanism: Rupture of a blood vessel in the brain leading to bleeding. Common causes: High blood pressure, aneurysms, trauma. Outcomes: Can be fatal, greater initial severity, possible long-term disabilities.
Ischemic Stroke
Mechanism: Blockage of an artery leading to reduced blood flow. Common causes: Blood clots, atherosclerosis, heart disease. Outcomes: Possible recovery with treatment, risk of disability or death.
