Stages of Addiction
5
Flashcards
0/5
Initial Use
The individual tries the substance for the first time, often out of curiosity, peer pressure, or to cope with problems. This stage does not necessarily lead to addiction.
Regular Use
The substance is used more consistently, which can mean socially or in specific situations. There might not be physical dependence at this stage, but patterns are being established.
Risky Use
Use of substance starts to become problematic. This can involve using it in dangerous situations or amounts that lead to legal or social issues.
Dependence
The individual experiences tolerance, meaning they need more of the substance to experience the same effect, and they may have withdrawal symptoms without it.
Addiction
The individual is unable to stop using the substance despite the harm it causes. There is a loss of control over substance use, and it becomes a central part of the user's life.
