Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
A form of psychotherapy that helps patients identify and challenge their negative thought patterns and behaviors related to addiction, with the goal of modifying them to improve emotional regulation and develop personal coping strategies.
Motivational Interviewing (MI)
A counseling approach that aims to strengthen an individual's motivation for and commitment to change, by exploring and resolving ambivalence toward addiction treatment.
Contingency Management (CM)
This therapy uses positive reinforcement to encourage sobriety; clients are given tangible rewards for maintaining abstinence and other treatment goals.
12-Step Facilitation Therapy
This is a structured approach that promotes engagement with 12-step self-help groups, based on the principles of acknowledgment, surrender to a higher power, and involvement in a supportive community.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Initially developed for borderline personality disorder, DBT is used in addiction to help manage distressing emotions and harmful behaviors through mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills.
Psychodynamic Therapy
This therapy explores the influence of past experiences and unconscious forces on the individual's current substance use, with the goal of increasing self-awareness and understanding of the addiction.
Family Therapy
Treatment that involves family members in the therapy process, aiming to heal family dynamics that contribute to the addiction and to bolster a supportive environment for recovery.
Mindfulness-Based Relapse Prevention (MBRP)
An approach that integrates mindfulness practices with traditional relapse prevention techniques to help individuals deal with triggers and cravings, focusing on the present moment without judgement.
