Flashcards
0/15
WaterSense
A partnership program by the U.S. EPA designed to encourage water efficiency in the U.S. through the use of a special label on products. Criteria include at least 20% more water efficient than average products, performance consistency, and availability of models in all price ranges.
Green Seal
An ecolabel for products and services that meet strict environmental standards. Criteria include reduced toxicity, lower emissions, and increased recyclability. It's designed to help consumers identify environmentally preferred products and services.
WELL Building Standard
A performance-based system for measuring, certifying, and monitoring features of buildings that impact human health and wellbeing, like air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort, and mind.
EU Energy Label
A label that provides information on energy consumption of products in the EU. It uses a scale from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient), giving consumers a clear and simple indication of a product's energy efficiency.
Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
A certificate that shows the energy efficiency rating of buildings in the UK, grading from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). It's a requirement when selling or renting a property, providing information on energy use and carbon dioxide emissions.
ISO 50001
An international standard for energy management systems. It provides organizations with a framework to manage energy efficiently, including the use of energy performance indicators, energy-efficient technologies, and good management practices.
Zero Energy Certification
Certification for homes and buildings that are extremely energy efficient and fully power their energy needs through on-site renewable energy sources. Criteria include achieving a balanced energy footprint and adhering to strict guidelines set by certifying bodies.
Hers Index
Home Energy Rating System Index, a scoring system for residential energy efficiency. The lower the HERS Index score, the more energy efficient the home is. A standard new home is awarded a reference score of 100, while a net-zero energy home would score a 0.
The Green Guide
A guide that provides ratings for building materials and components based on environmental, social, and economic aspects. Ratings range from A+ (best) to E (worst), considering factors like energy consumption in manufacturing and building operation.
Passive House Certification
A rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency in building design, reducing a building's ecological footprint. Criteria include thermal insulation, passive solar gains, passive cooling, airtightness, and ventilation.
LEED
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design; a certification for buildings, homes, and communities. Criteria include sustainable site development, water saving, energy efficiency, material selection, and indoor environmental quality.
Home Energy Score
Developed by the U.S. Department of Energy, it's a national system for energy rating of homes. Based on a scale from 1 to 10, it indicates how energy efficient a home is in comparison to others, taking into account the home's structure, heating, cooling, and hot water systems.
BREEAM
Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method; the world's leading sustainability assessment method for master planning projects, infrastructure, and buildings. Looks at categories such as energy and water use, health and wellbeing, pollution, transport, materials, and waste.
EPEAT
Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool; a rating system for electronic products' environmental impacts, considering production, operation, and disposal phases. Products are rated Bronze, Silver, or Gold based on criteria including material selection, design for end-of-life, energy conservation, and packaging.
ENERGY STAR
A symbol for energy efficiency, provided to products that are energy-efficient and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Criteria vary by product but are based on significant energy savings, features, and performance.
