Types of Bone Marrow Transplants
The main types are autologous (patient's own stem cells), allogeneic (donor stem cells), and syngeneic (stem cells from an identical twin).
Complications: Graft-versus-Host Disease (GvHD)
A condition where donor immune cells attack the patient's tissues; can be acute or chronic.
Conditioning Regimen
Pre-transplant process involving chemotherapy and/or radiation to prepare the patient for transplantation by killing cancer cells and suppressing the immune system.
Bone Marrow Transplant Rejection
When the recipient's immune system attacks the transplanted marrow, considering it foreign.
Stem Cell Sources for Transplant
Stem cells for transplant can come from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or umbilical cord blood.
Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT)
A procedure that restores stem cells that have been destroyed by high doses of chemotherapy or radiation therapy.
Bone Marrow Transplant Indications
Used to treat various blood diseases such as leukemia, lymphoma, aplastic anemia, and some solid tumor cancers.
Engraftment Process
The process by which transplanted stem cells start to grow and produce healthy blood cells in the bone marrow of the patient.
Total Body Irradiation (TBI)
A form of radiation therapy used as part of the conditioning regimen before a bone marrow transplant that targets the entire body.
Matched Unrelated Donor (MUD) Transplants
Allogeneic transplants where the donor is not related to the patient but is a close genetic match.
