Erythropoiesis

Flashcards
0/7
Erythropoietin (EPO) Stimulation
A hormone primarily produced by the kidneys that stimulates erythroid progenitor cells to differentiate into proerythroblasts.
Erythroblast (Normoblast)
An immature red blood cell that synthesizes large amounts of hemoglobin as it matures. Its nucleus condenses and is ultimately expelled.
Erythrocyte (Mature Red Blood Cell)
A fully matured, biconcave, anucleate cell specialized for oxygen transport due to its high hemoglobin content.
Hemocytoblast (Hematopoietic Stem Cell)
A pluripotent stem cell from which all blood cells are derived. Its function is to maintain blood cell production throughout life.
Proerythroblast (Pronormoblast)
The first committed cell in the erythroid lineage. It proliferates and begins to synthesize hemoglobin.
Reticulocyte
A non-dividing, immature red blood cell that has expelled its nucleus but still contains residual RNA. It is released into the bloodstream and matures into an erythrocyte.
Iron Utilization
Essential for hemoglobin synthesis during erythropoiesis, iron is incorporated into protoporphyrin IX to form heme.
