Flashcards
0/15
Multiple Myeloma
Symptoms: Bone pain, anemia, kidney dysfunction. Treatment: Chemotherapy, targeted therapy, stem cell transplant, supportive treatments for bone health. Prognosis: No cure, but treatment can extend survival and improve quality of life.
Hemophilia
Symptoms: Excessive bleeding, large or deep bruises, joint pain and swelling. Treatment: Regular replacement of missing clotting factor, physical therapy, and vaccinations to prevent hepatitis. Prognosis: Good with treatment, but complications can be severe.
Anemia
Symptoms: Fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath. Treatment: Depending on the cause, treatments may include dietary supplements, medications, or surgery. Prognosis: Often good with treatment but depends on the underlying cause.
Lymphoma
Symptoms: Swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, fever. Treatment: Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, stem cell transplant. Prognosis: Highly variable; some forms are highly curable while others are more challenging.
Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP)
Symptoms: Easy or excessive bruising, superficial bleeding into the skin, bleeding from the gums or nose. Treatment: Steroids, immunoglobulins, splenectomy, and platelet transfusions. Prognosis: Many adults have a chronic form, children often recover fully after an acute episode.
Iron-Deficiency Anemia
Symptoms: Extreme fatigue, weakness, pale skin. Treatment: Iron supplements, dietary changes, and treating underlying causes. Prognosis: Good with proper treatment; can usually be corrected.
Thalassemia
Symptoms: Fatigue, weakness, yellowish or pale skin. Treatment: Blood transfusions, chelation therapy, and possibly bone marrow transplant. Prognosis: Thalassemia major requires regular treatment, but most with thalassemia minor have a normal life.
Leukemia
Symptoms: Fatigue, fever, frequent infections, easy bleeding or bruising. Treatment: Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplant. Prognosis: Varies with leukemia type and stage; can range from curable to chronically manageable.
Polycythemia Vera
Symptoms: Headaches, dizziness, itching after bathing in warm water. Treatment: Phlebotomy, medications to decrease blood production, low-dose aspirin. Prognosis: Can be managed effectively with treatment; may increase risk of blood clots.
Von Willebrand Disease
Symptoms: Excessive bleeding from cuts or injuries, nosebleeds, heavy menstrual periods. Treatment: Medication to increase blood clotting factor, replacing von Willebrand factor, and sometimes birth control pills. Prognosis: Generally good with treatment, but it is a lifelong condition.
Aplastic Anemia
Symptoms: Fatigue, shortness of breath, rapid or irregular heartbeat, bleeding or bruising easily. Treatment: Blood transfusions, immunosuppressive medications, bone marrow transplant. Prognosis: Generally treatable, but can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Symptoms: Pain and swelling in one leg, typically the calf, warmth over the affected area, skin redness. Treatment: Blood thinners, compression stockings, filters in the vena cava, possible clot removal. Prognosis: Good with prompt treatment, but risk of recurrent DVT or complications like pulmonary embolism.
Hemochromatosis
Symptoms: Joint pain, fatigue, weakness, diabetes, liver disease. Treatment: Phlebotomy, chelation therapy, dietary modifications. Prognosis: Good with early treatment; untreated can lead to serious organ damage.
Sickle Cell Disease
Symptoms: Pain episodes, swelling of hands and feet, frequent infections. Treatment: Medications for pain, blood transfusions, and stem cell transplant. Prognosis: No cure, but treatments can relieve symptoms and prolong life.
Myelodysplastic Syndromes
Symptoms: Fatigue, shortness of breath, paleness, easy bruising or bleeding, fever or infection. Treatment: Supportive care, blood transfusions, chemotherapy, bone marrow transplant. Prognosis: Varies from slow progressing to rapid transformation into acute leukemia.
