White Blood Cell Disorders

Flashcards
0/12
Eosinophilia
An increased number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell that helps control allergic responses and fights certain infections. Symptoms can include skin rashes, wheezing, and abdominal pain. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve steroids or antiparasitic drugs.
Lymphocytosis
An increase in lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell. It can occur in response to infection or stress. Symptoms are often absent but can include swollen lymph nodes. Treatment focuses on the underlying cause.
Myelodysplastic Syndromes
Group of disorders caused by poorly formed or dysfunctional blood cells, often affecting the bone marrow and its production of white blood cells. Symptoms include fatigue and susceptibility to infections. Treatment options include supportive care, drug therapy, and bone marrow transplant.
Lymphocytopenia
Reduction in lymphocytes due to various causes such as immunodeficiency disorders, or treatments for other diseases. Symptoms may include frequent infections. Treatment focuses on the underlying cause and may include immune-enhancing therapies.
Histiocytosis
A rare disorder involving an abnormal increase in the number of immune cells called histiocytes. Symptoms can vary but may include pain, rash, and organ dysfunction. Treatment often involves chemotherapy or targeted therapy agents.
Multiple Myeloma
A cancer of plasma cells that causes unhealthy cells to accumulate in the bone marrow and crowd out healthy blood cells. Symptoms include bone pain, anemia, and infections. Treatment can include chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and stem cell transplant.
Hypereosinophilic Syndrome
A condition where eosinophil levels remain high over time without an obvious cause, which can damage organs. Symptoms may include fatigue, cough, and rashes. Treatment often includes corticosteroids and sometimes chemotherapy or immunosuppressive therapy.
Leukemia
A type of cancer that affects the bone marrow and blood, causing an increase in white blood cells that are often immature or abnormal. Symptoms include fatigue, fever, bleeding or bruising, bone pain. Treatment may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and stem cell transplant.
Neutropenia
A decrease in neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that fights infection. Symptoms can be subtle, but include recurrent infections. Treatment depends on the cause and may include antibiotics, granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), or stem cell transplant.
Lymphoma
Cancer that begins in cells of the immune system and can occur in the lymph nodes, spleen, or other organs. Symptoms include swollen glands, fatigue, fever. Treatment typically involves chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and sometimes immunotherapy or stem cell transplant.
Mononucleosis
Caused by the Epstein-Barr virus, it's a condition characterized by high numbers of monocytes and abnormal lymphocytes. Symptoms include fatigue, sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes. Treatment is supportive, including rest, hydration, and pain relievers.
Leukocytosis
A general term for increased white blood cell count, which can be a response to infection, inflammation, or other stimuli. Symptoms may be absent or nonspecific. Treatment targets the underlying cause, rather than the leukocytosis itself.
