Proper Hand Washing
Regular and thorough hand washing can prevent the spread of infections that can cause eye conditions like conjunctivitis. Use soap and water and scrub for at least 20 seconds.
Foreign Objects and Eye First Aid
If a foreign object enters the eye, do not rub it. Flush the eye with clean water or saline solution. In case of chemical exposure or if the object does not wash out, seek immediate medical attention.
Periorbital Cellulitis
An infection of the eyelid or skin around the eye. It requires immediate medical attention to prevent spreading, and treatment commonly includes antibiotics.
Conjunctivitis
Also known as 'pink eye', it is an inflammation or infection of the outer membrane of the eyeball and the inner eyelid. Treatment depends on the cause but may include antibiotic eye drops for bacterial infections or antihistamines for allergies.
Warning Signs for Eye Problems
Be aware of redness, frequent rubbing, excessive tearing, sensitivity to light, or squinting, as they can be indicators of eye problems in children that require a professional evaluation.
Strabismus
Condition where the eyes do not properly align with each other when looking at an object, leading to double vision or misalignment. Treatment may involve eyeglasses, eye exercises, or surgery.
Balanced Diet for Eye Health
A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 fatty acids can promote eye health. Nutrients like vitamin A, C, and E, as well as zinc, are particularly important.
Amblyopia
Commonly known as 'lazy eye,' characterized by reduced vision in one eye due to abnormal visual development. Recommended actions include patching the stronger eye, using atropine drops, or vision therapy.
Screen Positioning for Eye Care
Make sure screens are positioned at eye level and about 18-24 inches away from the face to minimize strain. The screen should also be slightly tilted back at a 10-15 degree angle for optimal viewing.
Refractive Errors
Includes myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, and presbyopia, resulting from the shape of the eye preventing light from focusing correctly on the retina. Correction typically involves eyeglasses or contact lenses.
Regular Eye Exams
Routine eye exams are crucial for early detection and treatment of vision problems in children. An eye care professional can recommend the appropriate frequency based on age and risk factors.
UV Protection
Exposure to ultraviolet light can damage the eyes over time. Children should wear hats and UV-protective sunglasses when outdoors to reduce risk.
Eye Safety During Sports
To prevent eye injuries, children should wear protective eyewear while participating in sports or activities that could pose a risk to their eyes.
Digital Eye Strain
Too much screen time can cause eye strain, dry eyes, and headaches. Encourage regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
Avoiding Secondhand Smoke
Exposure to secondhand smoke can increase the risk of developing severe eye conditions in children. Avoiding environments with smoke can protect their developing eyes.
