Energy Systems Used in Exercise
3
Flashcards
0/3
ATP-PC System
Function: Provides immediate energy through the breakdown of phosphocreatine (PC). Primarily used in: High-intensity, short-duration exercises like 100m sprints or heavy lifting, for activities lasting up to 10 seconds.
Aerobic System
Function: Produces energy through the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins in the presence of oxygen, for sustained ATP production. Primarily used in: Long-duration, moderate to low-intensity activities such as marathon running or cycling.
Glycolytic System (Anaerobic System)
Function: Generates energy by breaking down glucose without oxygen, producing ATP and lactic acid. Primarily used in: Activities that last from roughly 30 seconds to 2 minutes, such as 400m sprint or intense swimming.
