Types of Muscle Contractions
5
Flashcards
0/5
Isometric Contraction
Muscle tension is generated without any visible change in muscle length. Example exercise: Planks.
Concentric Contraction
Muscle shortens as it generates force, overcoming resistance. Example exercise: Bicep Curl (lifting phase).
Isokinetic Contraction
Muscle changes length during contraction while moving at a constant speed. Example exercise: Use of specialized equipment like isokinetic machines.
Eccentric Contraction
Muscle lengthens while under tension, often as it returns to its resting state from a contracted state. Example exercise: Bicep Curl (lowering phase).
Isotonic Contraction
Muscle maintains constant tension as it changes length. Combination of concentric and eccentric contractions. Example exercise: Push-ups.
