Spirit of MI
Describes the collaborative, respectful, and compassionate way of being that is the foundation of MI, emphasizing partnership and empowerment rather than a top-down approach.
OARS
An acronym for the core interviewing skills in MI: Open-ended questions, Affirmations, Reflective listening, and Summarizing. These skills facilitate understanding and encourage clients to express themselves.
Change Talk
Refers to the client's expressions of desire, ability, reasons, and need for change. It indicates movement toward behavior change and is reinforced in MI.
Righting Reflex
The tendency of healthcare professionals to correct clients' problems and behaviors, which can lead to resistance. MI encourages practitioners to avoid this reflex and support clients' autonomy.
Resistance
In MI, resistance is seen as a signal that the client perceives a lack of empathy or feels that their autonomy is being challenged. MI approaches suggest adjusting strategies to work with the client collaboratively.
Discrepancy
MI involves helping clients see the differences between their current behaviors and their broader life values and goals, increasing their motivation to change.
Roll with Resistance
A technique in MI where counselors avoid arguing or opposing resistance, instead using it as an opportunity to understand the client's perspective and invite further exploration of their views.
Elicit-Provide-Elicit
An MI technique for providing information or advice. The counselor first elicits the client's knowledge or preferences, provides new information, then elicits the client's response to this information.
