Miracle Question
A technique that asks clients to envision how their life would be different if they woke up tomorrow and their problem was solved. Example: 'If you woke up tomorrow and a miracle happened so that you no longer felt anxious, what would be the first sign you'd notice?'
Exception Seeking
A technique that involves exploring times when the client’s problem does not occur or is less severe, which can help them identify what they are doing differently during those times. Example: 'Can you recall a time when you didn’t feel this overwhelmed?'
Scaling Questions
A technique used to quantify the client’s perception of a problem, their confidence, or motivation. Example: 'On a scale from 1 to 10, how confident do you feel about managing your stress?'
Coping Question
A technique to help clients identify what they are already doing to manage and cope with their problems. Example: 'Despite the challenges, how have you managed to cope so far?'
Resource Activation
A technique that assists clients in recognizing their personal attributes, strengths, and past experiences that can aid in resolving their current problems. Example: 'What personal strengths have helped you in difficult times before?'
Compliments
In SFBT, compliments are genuine and positive remarks made by therapists to acknowledge clients’ abilities, efforts, and success, thus reinforcing their positive behavior. Example: 'I’m impressed with how you handled that situation.'
Homework Assignments
Specific tasks or exercises given to clients to do between sessions that can help them apply what they have learned in therapy to real-life situations. Example: 'For the next week, please note any moments when you feel more optimistic about your situation.'
Formula First Session Task
A technique where therapists ask clients at the end of the first session to observe what is happening in their life that they want to continue happening. Example: 'Until we meet again, I would like you to observe the things you would like to remain as they are.'
Relationship Questions
These questions explore how the client's relationships contribute to their desired solutions. Example: 'How would your partner know you were feeling better, even if you didn’t tell them?'
Problem-Free Talk
Conversations that focus on areas of the client's life that do not relate to the problem, which can help identify client resources and shift focus away from the problem. Example: 'Tell me about the hobbies or activities you enjoy.'
