Free Association
A psychoanalytic technique where the patient says whatever comes to mind. This is used to uncover unconscious thoughts and feelings.
Dream Analysis
This method involves interpreting the content of dreams to understand the unconscious conflicts. Symbolic meanings are applied to dream images.
Transference
A phenomenon where patients project feelings about important people in their lives onto their therapists. It's used to reveal unresolved conflicts.
Countertransference
Refers to the therapist's emotional entanglement with the patient, which can interfere with objectivity. Awareness is important for effective therapy.
Defense Mechanisms
These are unconscious coping techniques used to reduce anxiety by distorting reality. Examples include denial, repression, and projection.
Oedipus Complex
A child's feelings of desire for their opposite-sex parent and jealousy and rivalry toward their same-sex parent. It's a central theory in Freudian psychoanalysis.
Superego
Part of the human psyche that acts as a moral conscience. It represents internalized societal and parental standards.
Ego
Part of the psyche that mediates between the desires of the id, demands of the superego, and reality. It helps with defense mechanisms.
Id
The part of the psyche representing instinctual drives and desires. It operates on the pleasure principle and is entirely unconscious.
Projection
A defense mechanism where individuals attribute their own unacceptable feelings or thoughts to someone else.
Resistance
An unconscious defense mechanism in psychoanalysis where patients oppose changing their behavior or resist discussing painful memories.
Sublimation
A mature type of defense mechanism where socially unacceptable impulses or idealizations are unconsciously transformed into socially acceptable actions or behavior.
